Over thinking myself
jwthoma, Jan 03 2010
So over the last few months I have been playing basically break even poker at $50NL. I have been winning at $25 nl. Why is this???
Why is it I basically destroy $25 and break even on $50? The players are NOT better. I am playing worse.
I have been working to hard and too long to let this happen. It has nothing to do with LAG or TAG or any other style of play. It all has to do with playing smart poker.
Since we are starting a new year and I am wiping the slate clean and hammering back down. Time to play smart poker….
Here is some mindless ramblings:
Call less, bet more….
Betting can eliminate the need to have a playable hand.
Location, location, location
If I am playing well, I drive people away from my relentless pressure.
Table selection, the other night I found myself 6 tabling and 4 of them had an Average VPIP of 18 or less… ideal for my style is 25 to 30.
Ante tables are fun… but draw the craziest players.
If you are better then the others at the tables, why put yourself in marginal situations.
Pay attention to the rest of the full ring table, when playing a guy with a VPIP of 40+… more then likely 5 to 6 other good players… a higher average then an average table.
Have a reason to call, if not raise/bet or fold. The opposite of most people.
Opening limping invites problems.
Calling with a big hand in a multi-limped pot invites problems.
Raising a multi-limped pot with a marginal hand invites problems.
Calling a multi-limped pot (can) cause problems, or (can) get away from the hand cheaply.
I just need to play with my head on straight and ALWAYSN remember… We make out money from Value Betting not Bluff Catching!
Cards and Booze Do not Mix

I am sure that it is ground breaking information but it really is true. I started Friday with my profits up about $320. I sat at some tables that guys were card racks, and I tilted. Thank goodness I am over rolled for the level. I ended the day down about 8 buy ins.
It made me sick, but like the 6 Million Dollar Man we can rebuild it, we can make it bigger, stronger and better able to push small stacks around. I have won back 3 or 4 buy ins, but I hate to have to reboot.
I can whine about the card rack and how I lost with AK to 64 or KK to A3 etc, but the truth is if I were cold sober I am sure I would have handled things much differently.
$10 NL still is just $10 NL and 90% of the players suck.
Hand Update, I have only played 20,000 hands. I have a long way to go.
The wife and kids leave today for almost 3 weeks I plan to up the number of hands I play by 10 fold. I am going to try to be at 50,000 hands played by the time they return. I also plan to play live. I think I will be pokered out by the time they get back.
My 100K challenge
jwthoma, Jun 21 2009
I am tired of not being as good a cash game player as I want to be, I cannot understand why I keep losing at cash games but I can generally win in tourneys. For personal reason I want to stop playing as late at night, I need to get my fat ass in shape.
I have once again re-evaluated my play. I am losing big pots while winning small ones.
Here are my issues.
-I play too many hands out of position especially in 6 max games.
-I call too much with hands that need to hit a flop to win, if I play them I need to 3 bet and take control of the hand.
-My bet sizing is off, I either bet too little or too much.
o Balugawhale stated in a Deuces Cracked video, that "we win our money from value betting, not bluff catching".
-I have not had a multi-street plans when playing hands.
-I go on auto-pilot to often and only play my cards.
My plan…
I am dropping my play to $10 NL. To move up I have to play 100K hands and win a minimum of $500. I need to work on the above issues. I will play 100K to 200K at each level before I even think about moving up, assuming I am beating the game.
Poker Tracker has a nifty feature that I have not been using as much as I should, you can mark a hand for review, and this way you do not have to search for hands that need your attention.
My long term plan is to play larger samples of hands at each level, I need to get to a positive number at every level, that is going to be a trick at some of the levels.
I figure I will continue to play SNG's for fun, and also play the cash games, if it takes me 3 or more months to get 100K of hands in then so be it. I am going to have fun with it.
I have whined about these issues before, its time to fix them or quit. I need to drop in level because I do not have to 25+ buy in's for the $25 level in my bankroll, yet. The ego has to leave my game, leaving the confidence to make the correct play
This is an older post... I started the program May 18th... Currently just shy of 20K hands played... up $280
